American University Discover the World of Communication
Location: District of Columbia
Program Description:
Do you have a broadcast bug or a knack for film and writing? Then the School of Communication has a summer program ready to teach you broadcasting, news- and sports- writing, filmmaking, digital editing, and anything else you need to satisfy your communications cravings. With over 30 certificate programs, you’ll be ahead of the game in any communication field that interests you.
American University's Discover the World of Communication is open to all high school students grades 9 through 12, including those students entering 9th grade in the fall. Your classes are taught by SOC faculty as well as other professional journalists, filmmakers and Web writers and designers. The best part? Hands-on learning is mixed with smart, fresh lectures -- all at an exciting, fast pace.
Activities, guest speakers, events, and field trips are planned regularly throughout the summer. Past trips have included the monuments at night, a sit-in during a Washington Post editorial meeting, a Nationals baseball game, where sportswriting students sat in the press box, and a visit to NBC Washington where students received a tour and met anchors and correspondents. In 2007 several students also got a chance to meet the President of the United States.
